SheThrives: Today, we’re thrilled to share the story of Emily, a remarkable 17-year-old from Sydney, who’s already carving out her path as a leader in social activism. Emily, thank you for joining us. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Emily: Absolutely, and thank you for having me! I’m a Year 12 student in Sydney, balancing my studies with my passion for environmental and social justice causes. I started getting involved in activism when I was 14, and it’s been a whirlwind journey of learning, growing, and advocating ever since.
SheThrives: What inspired you to become involved in social activism at such a young age?
Emily: It was a combination of things, really. I’ve always been passionate about the environment, and seeing the impact of climate change on our planet and communities really hit home for me. I realised I couldn’t just sit back and hope for the best; I needed to be part of the solution. Plus, seeing other young activists around the world standing up for what they believe in gave me the courage to do the same.
SheThrives: Can you share one of the most impactful moments you’ve experienced in your activism journey?
Emily: One moment that stands out was organising a local clean-up event in my community. I didn’t expect many people to show up, but the turnout was incredible. Seeing people of all ages come together, driven by a shared goal, was incredibly moving. It was a tangible reminder that when we come together, we can make a significant impact.
SheThrives: Facing the challenges of activism, especially as a young person, can be daunting. How do you navigate these challenges?
Emily: It’s definitely not easy, and there are days when the scale of the problems we’re facing feels overwhelming. I’ve learned the importance of celebrating small victories and understanding that change doesn’t happen overnight. Also, finding a community of like-minded individuals has been crucial. It’s a powerful thing to know you’re not alone in this fight.
SheThrives: How do you balance your activism with the demands of being a teenager, like schoolwork and social life?
Emily: Time management and setting boundaries have been key for me. I dedicate certain hours to my activism work, but I also make sure to set aside time for my studies and to unwind with friends and family. It’s all about finding that balance and being kind to yourself if things don’t always go as planned.
SheThrives: What’s your vision for the future, both personally and for the wider world?
Emily: Personally, I hope to continue my activism work and study environmental science at university. For the world, my vision is a place where taking care of our planet and each other isn’t seen as an act of activism but as a natural part of our lives. I believe we’re capable of creating a more equitable, sustainable world, and I hope to be part of that change.
SheThrives: What advice would you give to other young people who want to make a difference but might not know where to start?
Emily: Start small and start local. Change begins in our own backyards, and you’d be surprised at how much of an impact you can have on your community. Also, educate yourself on the issues you care about and don’t be afraid to use your voice. Remember, you’re never too young to lead, inspire, and make a difference.
SheThrives: Emily, it’s been truly inspiring hearing your story. Thank you for sharing your journey with us and for reminding us of the power and potential of young leaders in creating a better world.
Emily: Thank you for giving me the platform to share my story. If it inspires even one person to take action, then that’s a win in my book.
Emily's story is a vibrant testament to the fact that leadership knows no age.
