SheThrives: Matilda, we're thrilled to have you with us. Could you begin by sharing how travel became such an integral part of your life?
Matilda: Thanks for having me. I grew up in a mining town, Broken Hill, so as you can imagine, the world felt pretty small. But then I took a trip to volunteer in remote Africa, and everything flipped. I reckon that's when the travel bug really bit me.
SheThrives: That's truly inspiring! What was it about that African experience that really shook things up for you?
Matilda: Well, living in the Outback, you're no stranger to vast landscapes. But Africa? It was another level of vastness, a different kind of wild. And the people, despite having so little, had so much spirit. It really gave me a fresh lens on life, you know?
SheThrives: For many, travel is about ticking off destinations. Your approach seems more profound.
Matilda: Yeah, nah, it's not about the passport stamps for me. It's about understanding the world—and myself—a bit better with each trip. Travel peels back layers of who you think you are and reveals parts of you even you didn't know existed.
SheThrives: Becoming an Outback Adventure Guide sounds like a perfect fit for you. How did that come about?
Matilda: Ah, it's a bit of a tale. I came back to Australia after a few years abroad and wanted to show people the beauty of our own backyard—the Outback. Got my health and first aid certifications and took my certs and before I knew it, I was guiding people through some of the most rugged terrains Australia has to offer with the consent of the traditional landowners.
SheThrives: Can you share one transformative experience that stands out?
Matilda: Oh, for sure. I spent some time in an Indigenous community up in the Northern Territory. The connection to the land, the storytelling, the sense of community—it's a lesson in what really matters in life.
SheThrives: Before we wrap up, what's one piece of advice you'd offer to women who are on the fence about travelling?
Matilda: Just get out there! Don't let fear hold you back. Whether it's a solo trip or a community excursion, travel will teach you more about yourself than years of staying put ever could.
SheThrives: Matilda, thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. Here's to many more transformative adventures.
Matilda: Cheers! And to all you SheThrivers, may your journeys bring you as much growth, insight, and joy as mine have.
